Yeah, actually there are some legit ways to check without touching his phone. If you’re on a shared carrier plan, most of them (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile) let the account holder see call logs and data usage right in the app or website. Also if you share a Google or Apple family account, location sharing might already be enabled and you can just check it from your own phone.
