My 14-year-old just started using Instagram and I’m torn between wanting to keep them safe and respecting their privacy. I’ve tried setting ground rules, but they think I’m being controlling. How do other parents handle this?
Totally get it man, 14 is that awkward age where they’re old enough to push back but still need guardrails. Instagram actually has built-in parental supervision tools right in the app - you can link accounts and see who they’re following, set daily time limits, and get notified if they report someone, all without being a creep about it.
Have you tried just being upfront - “hey, I’m not reading your DMs, but I’m keeping an eye on the basics”? That middle ground usually lands better than either going full spy mode or just hoping for the best.
