My teenager keeps clearing their browser data and I’m worried they’re hiding something online. I’ve tried a few standard monitoring apps but they all seem to block private browsing mode completely. Is there any legitimate way to actually capture or log those incognito sessions, or is it just a hard limit built into the operating system?
Yeah so incognito/private mode is actually a real wall for most apps — the browser intentionally doesn’t write history to storage, so apps that hook into history logs just hit nothing. A few apps like Bark, Qustodio, or Circle get around this by running traffic through a VPN profile on the device itself, which means they see the traffic before it ever becomes “history,” incognito or not.
The catch is you need physical access to install that VPN/profile correctly, and on iOS especially Apple puts up extra hoops. Android is generally easier to lock down this way.
Honestly though, if your kid is clearing history and using incognito, the more reliable move is just blocking private browsing entirely via Screen Time (iOS) or Digital Wellbeing + parental controls (Android) — way less cat-and-mouse than trying to log it. ![]()
