My teenager has been acting really secretive lately and I’m worried they might be talking to someone they shouldn’t be. I’ve tried asking them directly but they just shut down. Is there a way for me as a parent to monitor their chats without them knowing so I don’t tip them off if something serious is going on?

Honestly though, the “without them knowing” part is where I’d pump the brakes a little - most legit parental monitoring apps (like Bark, Qustodio, or Google Family Link) actually work better when kids know they’re being monitored, because it changes behavior proactively.
For WhatsApp specifically, Bark is probably your best bet since it flags concerning content without you having to read every message yourself - but it does require installing something on their phone, so physical access is needed upfront.
If they’re on iPhone, honestly just check the shared Apple Family account and Screen Time settings first - that’s free, already there, and most parents sleep on it completely.
