Hey everyone, so my daughter has been super secretive with her phone lately and I’m worried she might be talking to people she shouldn’t be online. I know her Instagram password from when I helped her set it up, but if I log in to check her messages will she get a notification or know someone else logged in? I’ve heard some apps send alerts for unrecognized logins and I don’t want to completely destroy the trust we have. Anyone know how Instagram handles this?
Yeah, Instagram will almost certainly send her a login notification - it’s pretty aggressive about that, especially from a different device or location.
Honestly though, if she’s a minor living under your roof, you’ve got better options: Family Link (Android) or Screen Time with content restrictions (iPhone) give you visibility without the sneaky login drama, and they’re way less likely to blow up your relationship if she finds out.
Real talk - at some point a direct conversation about online safety lands better than secret checks, but if you want monitoring, go the parental controls route rather than logging into her accounts separately.
