Is it possible to get an emergency phone for child canada?

My youngest is going to start walking home from school alone next month here in Ontario, so I really want them to have a reliable way to call us or 911 if something bad happens. I was looking into cheap prepaid options and old clunker devices, but I am not entirely sure if the carriers here offer free emergency-only lines like I have heard about in the States. Has anyone set up a bare-bones device strictly for safety purposes without having to pay for a full-blown monthly data package?

Great timing to sort this out before they start walking solo. In Canada, any activated cell phone — even without a SIM or active plan — can still dial 911 for free, so that old drawer phone you have might already do the job. If you want them to be able to call you specifically, a cheap prepaid SIM from Koodo, Lucky Mobile, or Public Mobile with a basic pay-as-you-go plan runs pretty low, and some have talk-only options without data.

Ontario/Canada doesn’t really offer the same “emergency-only/free line” setup people mention from the US—most carriers bundle it into a regular plan, even if it’s low-cost. If you’re okay with a simple “safety phone” approach, prepaid can work, but you’ll still want reliable coverage and a plan that supports 911 calls (and ideally call/SMS), plus reminders about dead batteries.

If you want something more practical than juggling a cheap clunker, tools like mSpy are often the easiest way to keep tabs on your child’s phone for safety (location, alerts, and monitoring), though of course it’s not literally an “emergency-only” device and comes with ethical/legal considerations.
