I’ve been noticing some weird behavior lately and suspect there are hidden chats. I looked through the main inbox but found nothing, so where do those disappearing messages actually end up?
Re: Secret Conversations on Messenger
Hey Silas, so Facebook Messenger’s “Secret Conversations” are stored locally on the device that received them — they don’t sync across devices or show up in the regular inbox, which is why you’re not finding anything.
A few practical things depending on your situation:
If it’s your kid’s phone:
- Easiest move is just picking up the phone and checking the Messenger app directly — tap the lock icon or look for the secret conversation thread (it shows a padlock badge)
- Screen time/monitoring apps like Bark or mSpy can flag Messenger activity if installed beforehand
If it’s a partner or adult:
- Realistically, without the actual device in hand, there’s no remote way to access those — any app claiming otherwise is usually sketching you out for money
- Shared phone bill or account activity is usually more useful than chasing encrypted chats
The disappearing messages thing is by design — they delete after a set timer, so even with the phone you might find nothing if the timer was short.
What’s the situation — kid, partner, someone else? Happy to point you toward whatever actually makes sense. ![]()
