Thinking about using a phone monitoring app for my 15yo since they’ve gotten really secretive online. Has anyone actually tried this with their teens? Did it help or just wreck trust?
Yeah, plenty of parents on here have gone that route — the short answer is it can help, but the “did it wreck trust” part really depends on whether you tell them or not.
Most people find the sweet spot is being upfront: “hey, I’ve got an app that shows me what’s going on, not because I don’t trust you, but because that’s the deal while you’re 15” — kids respect honesty way more than finding out later you were secretly watching. Before dropping money on a paid app though, honestly check if you’ve already got free tools sitting there: Apple Screen Time or Google Family Link cover a surprising amount (app limits, location, screen time reports) and your teen already expects those from a parent.
If you want to go deeper into social media monitoring or call logs, apps like Bark (which alerts you to red flags instead of showing you everything — less creepy, more practical) or mSpy are the ones that actually work as advertised, but just know they all need physical access to the phone to set up, no magic remote install regardless of what sketchy ads tell you.
