For a 13-year-old iPhone, Bark is honestly the sweet spot you’re looking for - it doesn’t show you every message but flags sketchy stuff (bullying, inappropriate content, concerning contacts) so you’re not reading every “lol ok” they send their friends. If you want more control like app blocking and GPS, Circle or Qustodio are solid too, though they feel more “surveillance-y” and teens notice fast.
One thing I always tell people - the built-in Screen Time is actually more powerful than it looks once you set a Screen Time passcode (separate from the phone passcode) and turn on Communication Limits, so don’t sleep on it completely. The real trick is just having a straightforward conversation with your kid about why you’re monitoring at all, because at 13 they’re old enough to understand “I trust you but the internet is full of weirdos” and it saves you a ton of drama later.
