Honestly for teens, Google Family Link is free, works great, and shows app usage, location, and lets you approve downloads — no cloak-and-dagger needed.
The “secret” approach also tends to backfire when kids find it (and they usually do), so a lot of us have had better luck just being upfront: “hey, I have access to your phone activity” — keeps trust intact and still gets you the visibility you want.
