Root-Redmi-5A-Unlock-Bootlaoder-Install-TWRP-Recovery-on-Redmi-5A

The Redmi 5A is an entry-level Android smartphone which comes with decent hardware and a good price tag to match. Priced at just Rs. 4,999 the 5A offers a host of features and runs MIUI, Xiaomi’s custom designed skin for android which is feature rich but doesn’t please everyone. So in today’s tutorials, we will look into how you can root your Redmi 5A and install a custom recovery like TWRP on the device to flash custom Roms.

Prerequisites

  • Xiaomi redmi 5A with an unlocked bootloader (You can follow this handy-dandy guide here to unlock your device)
  • Developers option enabled on the device (Tapping the build number from settings a few times enables it)
  • A computer preferably Windows (Barely any Android fanboy is using a Mac anyway)
  • ADB & fastboot drivers installed on the computer
  • Xiaomi USB Drivers (Download)
  • A custom recovery like TWRP (Download)
  • SuperSu Or Magisk
  • Redmi 5A Toolkit (Download)

Unlocking the bootloader and rooting the phone may brick the device, proceed with caution. You have been warned.

Installing TWRP

  1. Enable USB Debugging and OEM unlock from developer options.
  2. Connect the phone to the PC and open a command terminal or Powershell (In the ADB folder on your system hold Shift and right click on any blank space in the folder)
  3. If it’s the first time you are using ADB, some permissions may be asked for, grant all of them.
  4. To check if your device is successfully recognized in PowerShell type
“adb devices” (Without quotes. All commands are without quotes unless specified)
  5. Once your device is recognized give this command
    “adb reboot bootloader”
  6. Your device will reboot into fastboot mode.
  7. Copy the downloaded TWRP file to the ADB folder and rename it to Recovery.img (Not necessary but recommended for this tutorial)
  8. Now type in
“fastboot flash recovery.img”  (If you haven’t renamed the file to recovery.img  use the original filename.)
  9. After the recovery is flashed, to reboot, key in
    “fastboot reboot”
  10. The phone will reboot and you’ll be presented with the initial setup screen, skip everything and move to rooting the phone.

  1. Connect the phone to the PC and copy the downloaded SuperSU file to the root of your internal storage.
  2. Switch off the phone.

  5. Click the file and swipe to confirm install
  6. When the installation completes, go to wipe and clear the cache. Swipe to confirm again.
  7. Once done. Hit reboot.
  8. Your phone should have gotten a superSU app in the app drawer if everything is done successfully

Rooting the device with Magisk

  1. Similar to the SuperSu process, copy Magisk file to the root of the device storage.
  2. Boot into TWRP by holding volume up (+) and Power button together
