What is ADB and Fastboot?

This tool allows you to connect your android smartphone with your Computer running windows or mac os or linux and execute Linux commands to do several functions including unlocking bootloader, flash stock ROM, flash recovery image and much more. Though both tools serves different functions.

ADB – ADB means Android Debug Bridge. This tool is used to send Linux commands as well as Android Developer commands to android smartphone. This tool works with android phone while turned on and booted or it also works when android device is in recovery mode.

Fastboot – This tool can send commands to bootloader, flash custom recoveries or modify them.

Both these tools when combined, can perform magic on your android device. Till now these tools were bundled with Android Studio thus whoever wanted to install these tools, had to install whole Android Studio which was painful as Android Studio is very huge and heavy on Computer resources.

Few years ago, one XDA member came with easy solution dubbed as 15 second adb and fastboot installer which became very popular and first choice among many developers and regular users. But this tool hasn’t been updated since long so it is not recommended to use and sometimes it doesn’t even work due to compatibility issues.

But recently, Google finally released these tools as standalone to use without the need of installing Android Studio. And as this is official source, you don’t need to worry about the tool being outdated. Google will keep updating this tool from time to time.

How to install ADB and Fastboot

Okay, so let’s dive in to install adb and fastboot.

Step 1: Download ADB and Fastboot package

The package is named as SDK Platform Tools by Google. Google released seperate packages for Windows, Mac and Linux.

You can download these packages from below given links. These links will automatically get updated by Google thus you will always get latest version of ADB and Fastboot.

Step 2: Install ADB and Fastboot

Installing ADB and Fastboot is very easy and pretty straightforward. You just need to extract the package to appropriate place. You are not required to extract this package in C Drive (For windows user) though it is easy to remember if placed there.

Now, extract the downloaded zip package to appropriate folder which you can find later and note down the location. For example – for windows users : “C:\Android” .

Actually that’s it! Installation is done! 😛 But if you want to execute any commands, either you need to navigate to the folder where you extracted the zip and open command prompt or write down the full location whenever you want to execute ADB command.

For example: If you want to execute command “adb devices” then you need to enter following:

C:\Android\adb.exe devices

Now this is a problem, isn’t it?.

Step 3: Set PATH environment variable for ADB

As we saw in earlier step, it is a bit pain to remember the adb location and type that every time you want to execute any adb command. Thus now we will edit PATH environment variable to add the location of ADB so that whenever we call adb, the Operating system whether its windows, or mac os or linux, can get the actual location of ADB.

For Windows Users:

  • Go to My Computer and right click to select Properties

  • Click on Advanced System Settings and then click on Environment Variables as shown in below

  • In System variables section, click on Path variable. Then click on edit button.

  • (Windows 7,8): Add ;[LOCATION] to the end of the “Variable value” box, replacing [LOCATION] with the folder path where you extracted Platform Tools. Be sure to include the semicolon at the beginning so Windows knows you’re adding a new folder.
  • (Windows 10): Click “New” and paste the folder path where you extracted the Platform Tools. Hit Enter and click OK.

Now whenever you want to execute any adb command, simply open command prompt and enter your command.

For Mac OS/ Linux Users:

Editing PATH files in MacOS/ Linux operating system seems more difficult than windows specially if you are not familiar with command line. But it’s very easy method. Just run some commands and it will set the path variable automatically.

  • Open up a Console/ Terminal window by searching for it in Spotlight or navigating to Applications/Utilities.
  • Enter the following command to open up your Bash profile: touch ~/.bash_profile; open ~/.bash_profile
  • The .bash_profile file should open in your default text program.
  • Add this line to the end of the file: export PATH=”$HOME/[LOCATION]/bin:$PATH” replacing [LOCATION] with the location where you extracted ADB and fastboot.
  • Save the file and press Cmd+Q to quit your text editor.
  • In your terminal enter source ~/.bash_profile to run your Bash profile for the first time.

Now you can execute adb commands whenever you want without the need to specify the location.
