Since a long time, the “latest” Android version is officially announced during the Google I/O keynote. However, the first glance that we have on the latest and greatest Android offering from Google is the Developer Preview that gets released during early Spring, before the Google I/O event.
It seems like this case will remain true for the upcoming Android 9.0 as well, as suggested by the message on the latest code commit on Android Open Source Project dedicated repository which says “The future is now (2018 edition)”.
Google does not actually let out any hints or dates as for when Developer Preview is released and often do come as a surprise. However, this tiny “leak” may make it safe to assume that Android 9.0 is ready to be let out (at least for Developers!).
Even though the Developer Preview usually does not have all the features of upcoming Android versions, it does feature all the key changes that Google plans to bring on.
As of now, we do know when the next Android version (Android 9.0 P) will be announced, as this year’s Google I/O 2018 event is scheduled to happen from May 8 till May 10.
As for what the Android 9.0 will be named after, a recent puzzle game by Google which featured the invite for Google I/O 2018 does give a hint on the Android 9.0 being named as “Android Pineapple Pie”.
However, considering that Google loves to troll and surprise, the Android 9.0 Pineapple Pie named is not yet to be believed entirely.
